My Characters
Thanks to the Splashtag Creator by the incredibly-named Seymour Schlong (make sure to read their name out as loudly as possible), I was able to make splashtags (in-game banners that you see at the start of battles) for each of my characters. Now I may introduce them to you!
Squid is my very first Splatoon character. They're Agent 3, the customizable protagonist of Splatoon 1.
I was told the singleplayer story of Splatoon was sparse, and the customization is next to nothing (you pick a gender and an eye color), so I didn't want to make a character I'd get too attached to. That's why I made Squid, the squid that's always a squid.
I didn't know that your character can change color, so when Squid first changed from blue to pink, I assumed there had been some sort of shader error and I dubbed them The First Transgender Squid. I also ended up learning that being stuck in squid form is a canonical thing that can happen, and is treated as a disability.
Unfortunately, nobody told me in time that Agent 3 reappears in every Splatoon game. So now I'm stuck with Squid, the transgender disabled squid. God dammit.
I had no choice but to flesh them out after that. They're not a full-time squid, but it's their preferred locomotion, like autistic people and crawling around. They are extremely autistic, the kind that would get labeled "low-functioning". They do not listen to music, to the Squid Sisters' chagrin.
Videogames is my Agent 4, the protagonist of Splatoon 2. I did not really bond with my Agent 4, nor did I enjoy Splatoon 2's singleplayer very much - in retrospect, I named him "Videogames" because I was exasperatedly saying "ah, video games" after every level.
I imagine him as a stoner and a bit lazy. (You shouldn't smoke weed if you're that young but my characters suck and I want them to get sick.) He's gay, terrified of women, and not very good at video games. I actually started out saying this would be the one Splatoon character I have who doesn't suck to some degree, but the Octoling missions made me joke that he was misogynist. Dammit.
8 Ball is my Agent 8, the protagonist of Octo Expansion. I wanted a girl this time, but I picked one of the boy haircuts to make them a bit more conventionally military-looking. They have TERRIBLE anxiety. I think they're the Splatoon character I have that is the least terrible, but that's because Agent 8 is already pretty well-defined, so there wasn't enough room for me to imagine they secretly kick puppies or something.
Ah, Saul my beloathed. Saul was my second character after Squid and he happened mostly by accident. I started out trying to make a coherent character, but I use Saul Goodman as a display name on most places and so he ended up being named Saul as well, despite not being a lawyer nor a conman.
Saul is a shithead, to say the least. He's casually homophobic despite being a butch lesbian, deeply insecure, terrified of being seen as girly. He just sucks. But underneath that exterior is... something? Maybe?
I know the "secretly misunderstood bully" trope is pretty fraught, but it still hits close to home for me. I think a character like this has been brewing in my head for a few weeks now ever since I watched My Life as a Zucchini; the characters in that are all pretty fucked up, but they're also kids. It was hard for me to not imagine that a kid living alone in a hypermilitarized society would be a few degrees of fucked up.
Saul is also fucking TERRIFIED, full-blown phobia, of salmonids. He cowers from his Little Buddy. I was already imagining that C-Side was his favorite band, so it's funny enough that Omega-3 covers Clickbait - I think Saul hates that, just the worst sound in the world to him.
I'm trying to branch out into different weapons, but rollers are still iconic for him. Misunderstood, clumsy, and violent. Yeah!
After a while of playing exclusively rollers, I decided I wanted to switch it up. And I knew I wanted to make a character that would actually represent me, a sona who's older than the player characters - well, here's Chuck. She's an inkling and she's Saul's older sibling. They are both adopted, though I haven't fleshed out their parents yet.
I also decided at this point, just like how the sea creatures in Splatoon seem to be magnetically drawn towards imitating their ancestral human culture, Saul and Chuck's parents just had the idea that those would be beautiful names for a younger and older sibling. So there, that's why they have those names despite having nothing to do with Better Call Saul otherwise.
Chuck is a glass squid, which means she's from the deep sea. She has goopy sad eyes. I think she's a major recluse, the stereotypical Introverted Nerd type, which is something I kind of built out of the playstyle of Light Tetra Dualies. I also think she works in computers. Real life glass squids are translucent, and I was thinking that might apply to her personality too, that she tends to blend into the background. Saul looks up to her majorly and thinks she's cool.
Also, I only literally just now while writing this bio decided that she uses she/her pronouns, because my wife pointed out that all of my other Splatoon characters use they or he or it. So there!
Misc
My very first Splatoon character was an Octobomber. I'll have to dig up art of him later. I love the Octarians sooooo much, I feel like i could make a whole cast of just them.
I don't have any art of them yet but I have a character who's a Stinger. They were one of the fish off of a Fishstick and then they got promoted.
