Planning on writing a guide for getting into #Mastodon. I know there's plenty... but I plan to take a more "personal experience" approach.

What are some hurdles you had when joining Mastodon? Any not-immediately-obvious features?

What are some generally-accepted 'general' instances? I know mastodon.social is HUGE and not really recommended. I also know I could just look up a list but I'd like actual feedback.
