I enjoyed kbin for a while but realized part of the reason I've dropped off on using it is that it definitely absorbed the "boy's club" side of Reddit primarily. Lots of arguments, way more toxic behavior than most corners of Fedi. All of my hobby subreddits stayed on Reddit, which I don't enjoy using... no idea what to do from here.

Seeing my friends try out Fedi is so cool! I feel actually excited to use the internet again instead of mostly depressed and anxious. I mean, that might also be the meds, but you know, cool websites certainly help.

Planning on writing a guide for getting into #Mastodon. I know there's plenty... but I plan to take a more "personal experience" approach.

So, to anyone who cares to answer:

  1. What are some hurdles you had when joining Mastodon? Any not-immediately-obvious features?

  2. What are some generally-accepted 'general' instances? I know mastodon.social is HUGE and not really recommended. I also know I could just look up a list but I'd like actual feedback.

When I first decided I was going to rejoin Mastodon, I initially wanted to be on Wandering Shop, where all the cool sci-fantasy writers hang out. I even spent weeks lurking the local timeline to see if it was right for me, only to finally commit to signing up... and learning they're invite-only. Oops.

I joined this instance entirely based on a completely random Reddit recommendation. And I've grown oddly attached to it. I think it's probably better we have no major celebrities here.

Does anyone here (by which I mean, either followers or people on my instance) use Pixelfed? It seems cute enough but I'm totally lost for what instance to join.

I don't have it in me to make a longer post right now... But the Reddit strike is a good thing. Reddit being the best place to find information is not an ideal, and things moving to their own communities will be a positive. This is exactly why keeping all communities on a single (increasingly inaccessible) website, that could go down at any moment, is a bad thing - just look at Twitter.

#I'm on kbin and enjoy it! but that isn't a recommendation per se #it's just a website I happen to enjoy so far #it's a good time to look around and make your own opinions
